June Gardening Check List

Keep your gardens watered – especially those plants you added in April and May! We’re heading into the hottest, driest time for most regions. Consider installing soaker hoses or drip-irrigation lines if hand-watering is getting to be too much.
Trim evergreen hedges (boxwood, yew, arborvitae, juniper, privet, hemlock, etc.) Spruce, fir and pines also can be pruned back, if needed, now that most of the new growth has occurred. Remove only the new growth of these… not older wood or you’ll risk killing branches.
Pull or spot-spray those weeds. Early in the month, make a second application of weed preventer to the shrub and flower beds to stop later-germinating annual weeds, especially if it’s been cool and rainy. The second application should be timed 9 to 12 weeks after the first one.
Scout for pest problems and treat as needed. Among the trouble you might run into this time of year are bagworms on evergreens and shade trees, borers on birch and dogwood, woolly adelgids on hemlock, lacebugs on azalea and pieris, spider mites on spruce, hemlocks and juniper, and scale on euonymus. Avoid spraying when temperatures are more than 85 degrees.
Harvest spring-planted vegetables. Don’t leave any space bare from pulled plants, though. Replant immediately with summer crops of beans, carrots, corn, peppers, beets, pumpkins, potatoes or cucumbers.

Daisies

I have always loved Daisies .

The common daisy , also known as the English, European or lawn daisy, is a popular rock garden or edging plant, but it is also considered to be a weed in some areas.

Daisies are typically ray-shaped with red, white or pink petals and yellow centers. Some white flowers are pink on the petal tips. Double-bloom variations also exist.

Daisies are very prolific, and where conditions are favorable, they can escape into gardens and lawns.


In my garden we have Yellow .

WEEPING CHERRY TREE

Its spring time and Our Weeping Cherry Tree is in full bloom :)

What a dramatic look you get with its pale-pink blossoms !( other variety comes in white ) They are Natives of Japan , weeping cherry trees have long drooping branches similar to the weeping willows. In the fall I like to trim the bottom all even , If you just let it grow the branches will reach the floor . This tree gives lots of shade and makes growing anything under it difficult so the best thing to do is mulch all the way to around to the perimeter of the tree making it very easy to landscape around it.

Freezing Temperatures tonight

If anyone has taken their indoor plants outdoors already like I have , be sure to cover them or take them back in tonight or you will lose them due to freezing temperatures . Lets not forget about our green thumb :)

Get those plants outdoors

Lets not forget to start taking some of our hybernating plants from indoors to outdoors if you haven`t already ..Plants like the lemon tree,like to be outdoors in a nice sunny area as long as there is no frost they will thrive ... If you leave them indoors to long , they will lose all their leaves plus lose their fruit and if the flowers were not pollinated before you brought them in , the plant will not bear many fruit so if you get them outside early enough the first bees out may still pollinate your flowers in time to bear fruit .

Plants taken inside for the winter ...

Just a reminder to water those plants that were taken inside for the winter .

Got to give them some love , you don`t want to forget about them .  And Yes I believe that talking to your plants will make them healthier .

I still have some parsley, rosemary, and sage growing nicely outdoors . End of December in New York , I think i am doing good ! I took the pots and placed them under my deck out of the direct cold and wind but they are still able to get some sunlight .

I hope you have all planted your bulbs for next year . I can`t wait to see what pops up in the spring :)

S.O.S. for those plants that don`t like the cold

If you have plants that need to be brought indoors for the winter and haven`t done it yet .... GET TO IT !! ... Transplant all the plants that have over grown their containers, fertilize all your container plants , give them a nice watering and bring them in your garage ...( I water them only once a month once I have taken them inside )to make mine really thrive in the winter I set mine on wheels so that on the warmer days I will open the garage door and just roll them out for the day and wheel them right back in as  soon as the sun goes down . AAAAH the luxury of being a SAHM ! :)


I am already counting the days till I can get back out there and stick my hands into some dirt and get it ready for planting .
